 Maker's 46 is essentially the standard expression with added spice. This was not intended to compete with the core expression, instead it's a cousin to it, something different for those that like spicy bourbon. They add this extra dimension by inserting seared French oak staves into the barrels (with the stave profile "number 46" - thus the name). It's utterly stunning.

 The nose is sharp with dry grass and green apples with notes of honey and vanilla, making it sweet, but with an edge. The ex-bourbon barrels show up strongly here, as they do in so much of what The Glenlivet does, putting more vanilla down on the flavor, and pulling the sweetness over so that one foot is in the malty, honey range and another is in the corn syrup, cereal-sweet zone.

Caramel, malt, honey, orchard fruit and an intense, almost cloying, sweetness dominated the initial flavor. After a while the orchard fruit started to define itself more as a peach like flavor and some bits of oak and baking spices began to appear. In the last dram of the bottle the orchard fruit had died off a bit, but the honey, malt and oak had become much more dominant and mixed with some arriving notes of cinnamon.

The palate is thick and full. Notes of citrus with smooth sweetness. The smoke wafts with notes of seaweed. The oak is quite rich with grist and cereal and malt. The finish is of good length with fruit and dry oak.

 Hard and rocky, evoking sea cliffs and tumbling waterfalls. Rock candy. There is a shadow of heather in the middle notes, and a solid background of peat (but not smoke). Very earthy and mineral. The body is firm, a touch oily, and a little creamy, but the mineral flavors contrast starkly. Intricate, complex, evolving.

The finish is of medium length with notes of cereal and a fresh greenness.
